In a strategic move to strengthen its presence in India, Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn is set to begin iPhone enclosure production in Tamil Nadu. The company is reportedly constructing a new facility within the ESR Industrial Park in Oragadam, a rapidly growing industrial hub in the southern state.
According to industry sources, Foxconn’s new unit will be dedicated to manufacturing metal enclosures for Apple iPhones, marking a significant expansion of its operations in India. This unit will be located close to Foxconn’s upcoming display module assembly plant, which is also in an advanced stage of development in the same industrial park.

“Foxconn plans to start making enclosures in Tamil Nadu as they deepen their footprint in the country. Construction has begun for their enclosures unit at the industrial park,” said a source familiar with the matter.
This development reflects Foxconn’s continued commitment to localizing key components of iPhone production in India, especially as Apple looks to diversify its supply chain beyond China. Over the past few years, India has emerged as a crucial manufacturing destination for Apple, and Foxconn has been central to this shift.
The expansion also comes at a time when Tata Electronics, an emerging rival, is scaling up its own iPhone enclosure production. Tata’s facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, has reportedly ramped up production and is targeting a milestone of 100,000 enclosures, highlighting the increasing competition in the iPhone components manufacturing ecosystem in India.
The strategic location in Tamil Nadu offers several advantages, including a strong industrial infrastructure, proximity to Chennai port, and favorable state policies aimed at promoting electronics manufacturing. Tamil Nadu is already home to several other global electronics manufacturers, further boosting its reputation as a preferred electronics manufacturing destination in India.
Foxconn’s latest initiative is aligned with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, which have encouraged major global players to invest in local manufacturing. By manufacturing enclosures locally, Foxconn not only enhances its supply chain efficiency but also contributes to the Indian economy through job creation and technology transfer.
Industry experts believe that Foxconn’s move could further solidify India’s position in the global iPhone supply chain, paving the way for more component manufacturing to shift to the country in the coming years.
With Apple’s growing ambitions in India, and the government’s push to boost domestic manufacturing, Foxconn’s investment in Tamil Nadu signals a positive step forward in transforming the region into a high-tech manufacturing hub. As construction of the new unit progresses, all eyes will be on how this move reshapes the dynamics of iPhone production in India.
