When Vasudha and Neeraj Kapoor co-founded The Gurukul Foundation School in 2004, their vision was bold—to bring world-class education to Kashipur, a small town overshadowed by India’s metros. Two decades later, Gurukul stands as a model of holistic learning, preparing children not just for exams but for life.
Starting with 13 students and three teachers, the Kapoors built their school against formidable odds. Limited resources, reluctant parents, and the challenge of recruiting teachers in a non-metropolitan setting tested them. Yet, their persistence turned obstacles into steppingstones.
Vasudha’s motto, “seeing our child in every child,” shaped the school’s ethos. The memory of their late son Chaitanya infused every brick with love and purpose. Neeraj’s background as a farmer-entrepreneur ensured the model was sustainable, disciplined, and community-driven.
Today, Gurukul boasts 1,100 students, 75 educators, and two thriving campuses. Its USP lies in merging India’s ancient Gurukul philosophy with 21st-century pedagogy. Children learn values, empathy, and resilience alongside STEM, robotics, arts, and debates.
Awards and accolades reflect its impact: ranked Kashipur’s #1 school, among Uttarakhand’s top 10, and winners at NASA competitions and national debates. Gurukul has also broken new ground, being the first school in India to sign an MoU with IIM Kashipur for innovation labs.
Looking ahead, the Kapoors dream of scaling Gurukul into a pan-India network of early education centres, reducing the metro-rural education divide. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s call to awaken the potential of every child, they see education as both personal service and nation-building.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, their advice is heartfelt: “Build with heart, not just with strategy. Legacy comes from purpose, not profit.”
From Kashipur to the nation, the Gurukul dream is expanding—one child, one community, and one vision at a time.
